From Karma To Christ Flyer By Pastor Mahesh Shivnani

This is the story of my change from Hinduism to become a follower of Jesus Christ the Lord. I am from a Sindhi Hindu family and have lived most of my life in Spain. My father was an immigrant businessman from India who started working in Tangier, Morocco, then transferred to Gibraltar in the late 1960s, and finally settled in Malaga in southern Spain. I grew up in a typical, large, extended family with good morals. We were god-fearing, we worked hard, and we focused on having a good name in both the Hindu and the business communities. We practiced the traditional religious ceremonies of any Sindhi Hindu family (Pujas, Janmashtami, Satyanarayan, Cheti Chand, etc.) We also maintained a strict devotion to our Sai (guru-god) in Baroda, India.

At the age of nine, while studying at Sunny View School in Torremolinos, Spain, the eight-year-old son of a Christian missionary family and I became good friends. He told me about Jesus. As Hindus, we were taught that all gods are the same. So, hearing and learning about this “Western” god, Jesus, was not a taboo, but we were not allowed to reject our family gods or the guru we worshiped.

As a Hindu, I believed in reincarnation and the afterlife where Karma, my good or bad works, determined whether I would be reborn into a better or worse life. I had to connect to God in this life through self-denial, giving to the poor, good works, religion and good morals. There was no real fear of hell or judgment, as I would have many lives to do penitence for the sins I had committed in this life and in my previous ones. But to be reborn poor, of a lower caste, or as an animal was a type of hell where I would suffer in order to balance out my Karma.

Teachings in the Bible contradicted what I had been brought up to believe. The Bible says that there is only ONE TRUE Creator, JESUS, and He is the ONLY WAY. People are given only ONE LIFE to live, and then we face the JUDGMENT. My good works are considered as filthy rags in God’s eyes, and no sacrifice I make is acceptable to Him as a remedy for my sins. In other words, because of my sins, I am destined to an eternity in hell, separated from God. And the only way to change that so I can be with Him forever is by believing in and living for Jesus Christ and not any other god, idol or philosophy.

The good news is that the Bible also says that God came to earth as Jesus, became a sacrifice for our sins on the cross, and will take away all our offenses and wrongdoings if we choose to believe in Him and follow Him ALONE. On the third day after Jesus died and was buried, He came back to life, declaring victory over sin and death. That means I can have the assurance that I will not go to hell, that all my past and present sins are forgiven, and that I can connect with God and talk with Him right now. No longer will I have to fear reincarnation or believe that good or bad Karma will determine my everlasting fate. No more will I be forced to follow false traditions and empty religious practices and restrictions regarding foods, clothing and feasts.

It was a wonderful feeling to know that God had showed me His love by making a way for me to be with Him forever. But there was one problem: what about my family, my Hindu culture, and what people in the community would say if I decided to follow Jesus? Those were real fears that, along with the frightening thought of ending up in hell, caused me many restless nights.

So, when I was 19, my parents, aware of my struggles, decided to send me to India that summer to speak with our Sai (guru). I was uneasy about having to face the guru and share my desire to become a follower of Jesus Christ. But at the same time, I wanted to make sure I had not been brain-washed by my Christian friends, since a decision to follow Jesus would cause conflict with my family and religious culture. After a long conversation with the guru where he and I discussed all the issues mentioned above, he realized that I had made up my mind. But before I left, he requested one last thing. He said: “I want you to love me, respect me, and worship me.”

I immediately answered, “I will love you and respect you, but I cannot worship you
because you are not the Living God.” At that very moment, I realized that my life would never be the same. I had truly encountered Jesus as the Living God through His love, sacrifice, and teachings, and there was nothing that could change that.

A few months later, I completely surrendered my life to Jesus as my only true God and Savior. I immediately experienced great peace and no longer dreaded the afterlife. I was now certain that Jesus lived in me and that I had a personal relationship with the mighty Creator.

Here are some verses in the Bible I could not ignore. Either they are all lies, or they are all truths that will determine where you will go when you die. It’s your choice, so make your decision wisely.

  1. We are all sinners (Romans 3:10,23).
  2. The wages of our sin is death (Romans 6:23).
  3. Jesus took our punishment and died on the cross for us sinners (Romans 5:8).
  4. Salvation comes by faith in Jesus, that is, by declaring with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in our heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9,10).
  5. Call on the name of the Lord in prayer, and you will be saved (Romans 10:13).

If you want to believe in Jesus and receive Him as your Savior, pray the following prayer:

I confess that I am a sinner and that I need Jesus, who died on the cross, to take away my sins. I believe in my heart that Jesus is the Living God, that He died on the cross, and that He rose from the dead on the third day. I invite You, Jesus, into my heart and accept You as my only Lord.

If you have prayed this prayer, tell us, and we will guide you along your next steps in following Jesus.
