Spiritual Street Food

(1 Chronicles 16:11) “Seek the LORD and his strength. Always look to Him.”

(James 1:22) “Keep on being obedient to the word, and not merely being hearers who deceive themselves.”

(Hebrews 4:12) “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow, as it judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart.”

Who has time nowadays or the desire to sit for a couple of hours and enjoy a meal? We all love and prefer street food or fast food, as it is first of all fast, normally cheaper, and full of taste that gives us instant pleasure. What we don’t realize is that it destroys our family life by showing that we don’t care about spending quality time with each other, puts chemicals and excess fat in our bodies that eventually kill us, and is not as cheap as you think in the long run. Our spiritual lives and the way we feed our souls have turned out to be the same way.

We no longer take the time to pray and sit with God in a conversation. We prefer to do flash prayers, while we are anxious to get to work, and just present our petitions. Don’t just leave a message for God to listen to you, but call Him and listen to what He wants to tell you as well.

When was the last time you sat down for a teaching that lasted over an hour, and truly enjoyed it taking notes and savoring every bite? Or are you those that just like the summary, the cool phrases, and the quotes that you can then share on social media?

When you sit with God during a sermon, even if it’s online, God starts to bring things out that were hidden within your soul that need changing. Your time with God’s Word and with God’s people is your time of undergoing surgery to cut out the cancer that spiritual fast food has created inside of you. A pill will only take away the symptoms, but surgery cuts out the problem.

These short phrases or teachings will only give your temporal satisfaction and relief, but you will never be able to make serious changes in your life in order for God to make you fruitful for His kingdom. And we all know what God does with those that do not bear fruit for Him.

Try taking notes the next time you are listening to a preacher, and then separate a time to sit with God reading your notes. This can also be done as a family activity or a short Bible study with friends and neighbors. You will be amazed at how God starts to add more and more taste to your notes and makes every verse personally talk to a situation in your life.

These desires to change and be more like Christ will only occur when you wait for God to finish speaking to you instead of you just going through the Spiritual Drive Trough.

• Heavenly Father, You are The Lord who restored Job’s losses, The Lord who gave Job twice as much as he had before, The Lord who blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.
• Forgive us for being selfish and just presenting our petitions, without asking or caring about what Your will is for us today.
• Thank you that you are able to completely change our lives through our time in prayer.
• We ask that Your Word will penetrate our soul and reveal to us the things within our heart and mind that are not pleasing to You.
• We want Your help to become doers of the Word and to stop deceiving ourselves.
• Make us desperate to spend time daily with You and with Your Word.
• We thank You for our pastors that take the time to prepare the spiritual food You want us to receive. Give them more grace and strength to continue faithful to their calling.

• We ask in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen
