Envied By Your Siblings?

(Genesis 37:23-24) “As it was, when Joseph arrived where his brothers were, they stripped off the tunic that Jacob had given him, that is, the richly-embroidered tunic that he was wearing. They seized him and tossed him into the cistern, but the cistern was empty. (There was no water in it.)

(vs 26-27) “Then Judah suggested to his brothers, ‘Where’s the profit in just killing our brother and shedding his blood? Come on! Let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites! That way, we won’t have laid our hands on him. After all, he’s our brother, our own flesh.’ So Judah’s brothers listened to him.”

(Colossians 3:13) “Be tolerant of one another and forgive each other if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, you also should forgive.”

Have you been rejected by your siblings because your dad favored you more than them? Did you get away with more as a child? Did your family steal from you, cheat you, or simply pushed you aside because of the way you are? Have you been abused and oppressed by a sibling simply because you are quiet and simple in your ways? Have they mistaken your silence for weakness? Not to worry. This simply means that you are favored by God and He is about to use you to do great things.

If there has been anyone who had the right to hold a grudge, it was Joseph in the book of Genesis. He was favored by his father, Jacob, above all his brothers because Jacob had him in his old age. He was even given a colourful coat to wear to show that He was favored.

The hatred was such that his brothers plotted to kill him but ended up selling him into slavery. After much suffering and being in prison for close to 13 years, God showed favor upon him and made him the prime minister of Egypt. When his brothers came to him for help, escaping the famine that hit the land, he opened up his arms and forgave them. He did not hold a grudge, nor make them suffer for all the years he had lost of his youth.

However, in order to experience the victory, joy, and favor Joseph experienced, you have to, first of all, have Christ as the center of your life. You have to let go of all resentment and grudges against those who have hurt you. And finally, you have to learn to forgive unconditionally, just as God forgives you when you confess your sins to Him.

If anyone envies you or is purposely always trying to hurt you, it’s because they cannot stand the favor God has put upon your life. Don’t think that this only happens with unbelievers, but this envy is also common within the church as not everyone will understand why you have such zeal for Christ. You succeed where they fail, you are celebrated when they are merely tolerated and you are given the best without even asking.

Start to move forward like a proud, confident lion and let the jackals follow behind mocking and wishing they had your confidence and calling.

• Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised. Lord, You are Good, the Unchanging Lord, He who is upright. O Lord God of truth. We praise you.
• Thank You, Father, for your favor upon us and for forgiving us of all our sins.
• Thank You, Father, that even if the whole world hates us and rejects us, You will continue to take care of us.

• Father, thank you for raising up a Judah, who will convince our oppressors not to stain their hands with our blood.
• We decide to forgive those who have hurt us in the past, and we declare that we will receive them with open arms when they come to us for help.
