(1 Kings 19:11-12) “‘Go out,’ he responded, ‘and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD.’ And there was the LORD, passing by! A tremendous, mighty windstorm was tearing at the mountains and breaking the rocks in pieces in the presence of the LORD, but the LORD was not in the windstorm. After the wind there came an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.”
“After the earthquake there came fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”
(Jeremiah 29:13) “You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.”
Where do you go to hear God’s voice? Do you hear Him at all? Does He speak to us? There are many ways God uses to speak to us. He uses the Bible, sermons, prophesies, brothers and sisters in the faith, hymns and psalms, and events that we face on a daily basis. But probably the most important and intimate message from God is when we are completely alone with Him, waiting for Him to speak.
As we just read, the prophet Elijah was seeking to hear from God. God was not in the storm, nor in the earthquake, not even in the fire, but in a still small voice that whispered to him. Just like Elijah, we need to stop expecting the big show, the bright lights, and the miraculous manifestations to know what God wants to tell us.
We need to shut out all the voices, and distractions, and wait upon His small still voice that will pierce our soul and put all things in the right perspective. He will reveal to you hidden things about yourself that you want no one else to ever find out, and at the same time, He will tell you how to achieve heights of greatness. But this will only happen when you expect Him to speak to you while you silently wait and meditate upon His Word.
Meditation, focusing on the dead, worshipping nature, or emptying the mind, is a dangerous practice as you do not know which voices are going to speak to you. The devil can also speak to your mind, and he does this on a regular basis. However, if you submit to the Living Word through the blood of Jesus, then, and only then can you be guaranteed to hear from God.
By wanting to obey God above all things, we are promised to always know His will. This is what God means when He says that when we search for Him with all our hearts is when we will find Him. In other words, we desire Him so much that we are willing to make Him the center of all our dreams and desires.
If the devil tries to imitate God’s voice, you will recognize it as you are used to meditating on God’s word. Therefore, learn to spend time alone with Him through His Word.
Prayers
• Heavenly Father, You are the God of vengeance, God of hosts, the God that appears onto His people.
• Thank you for speaking to us and revealing yourself to us through your Word. That you did not just create us and then abandon us to our own destiny, making us slaves to the consequences of our own good and bad choices.
• Thank you for making a way through Jesus to have a personal relationship with you. Thank you for saving us from eternal separation from you through the sacrifice on the cross.
• Help us to learn to wait upon your voice to find the answers we need. We ask that you will help us recognize your voice from all the other voices we hear.
• We reject all the lies that are speaking to us that contradict what you speak.
• Set us free from the spirits we have allowed to enter our minds through empty meditation and fill us with the knowledge of Your Word.
•
• In Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen
