I’ve Got Your Back

(Ephesians 4:15-16) “Love should always make us tell the truth. Then we will grow in every way and be more like Christ, the head of the body. Christ holds it together and makes all of its parts work perfectly, as it grows and becomes strong because of love.”

(John 17:21) “I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.”

(John 17:26) “I told them what you are like, and I will tell them even more. Then the love that you have for me will become part of them, and I will be one with them.”

There is an amazing sense of confidence and security when you know that you are not alone in anything you do. If you are married, you especially notice this as your spouse will normally be supporting you in all your decisions. It’s good to know that they’ve got your back. This unity is the key to success in any area of life. How many people can you truly say to “I’ve got your back”?

This is why we are attracted to people with the same faith, same cultural background, and of the same generation, as we know that we will not be misunderstood, mocked, or left aside and rejected for being different. That is why God makes sure that no matter who you are, you understand that you are valuable to the whole unit and that He can use you for His glory.

But in order to be in unity, supporting each other, defending one another, and encouraging one another to grow, we need the love of God to be strong in our lives. Only then can we truly be one in mind, purpose, and goal, just like Christ was with the Father while He walked the earth.

In the Marines, they have a saying “No man left behind”. This means that no matter what the sacrifice or the danger, no one will be left behind on the battlefield. This is the attitude that makes an army invincible as we focus all our strength against a common enemy and not each other.

Unfortunately, the modern church spends too much time attacking each other’s differences in opinions about doctrine and traditions and this only makes us love each other less and therefore become weak as a community.

When unbelievers see this happening on social media, all we achieve is to drive them away as they are searching for a community that will love them and gives them a sense of security. What they see is an army that stands in a circle facing each other and shoots.

The key to be one with Christ, and to act the way He did with everyone. Christ loved, healed, suffered, forgave, and sacrificed Himself even though we were wrong. In other words “He had our back.”

• Heavenly Father, Your mercy is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear You and Your righteousness to children’s children. As the heavens are high above the earth, so great is Your mercy toward those who fear You, Lord.
• Thank You for loving us and teaching us how to love each other and grow spiritually.
• Forgive us for not being in unity with other brothers and sisters of the faith.
• Forgive us for always wanting to be right in our understanding of scripture.
• Help us understand that we can be wrong in all our understanding if we fail to love the way You love us.
• We ask that we continue to grow in Your love and that Christ continues to hold all things together.
• We declare that we will work perfectly together for Your glory and that we can openly say “I’ve got your back”.

• We ask in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
