Stay in Balance

(Colossians 3:16) “Let the word of the Messiah inhabit you richly with wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, and singing to God with thankfulness in your hearts.”

(John 15:4) “Abide in me, and I will abide in you. Just as the branch cannot produce fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.”

(1 Corinthians 13:2) “If I have the gift of prophecy and can understand all secrets and every form of knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains but have no love, I am nothing.”

There are those who focus only on studying God’s word and ignore or even deny the power, gifts, or the existence of the Holy Spirit as a person. While there are others who only depend on the power of the Holy Spirit and are very ignorant towards the doctrines and teachings in the Word, making their faith an emotional journey that is not grounded firmly in Biblical teachings. They are so spiritual that they don’t walk on the ground but act as if they hovered over it. While others are so filled with a natural knowledge of the Word that their prayers don’t go past the ceiling and their preaching only excites your emotions.

Both approaches are wrong if done exclusively. We need to have a bit of both in order to live a full, balanced Christian life. The Word is our foundation, and the Holy Spirit is the confirmation of the truths we have read and studied. In the same way, unless you are in full-time ministry, you need to be spending time in Church life as well as the workforce providing for your family.

You can be completely prosperous in many areas of your life but be spiritually dead or barren. You can also be super-spiritual but have a short fuse or a lack of self-control. Compassion and love are a sign of spirituality, not singing or praying louder than the rest. If you want to be in balance, you need to be abiding in Jesus and make Him the source of your spiritual and natural strength.

You cannot say you know Jesus and deny love to your brother, say you hear His voice and not hear the cries of your lonely neighbors. You cannot say that you understand God’s grace and forgiveness, yet you do not give to those in need, nor do you forgive those that offend you.

Jesus did all He did in the natural but was empowered in the spiritual leaving us an example of how we need to walk our Christian life.

• Jesus, with the pure, You will show Yourself pure, with the devious, You will Yourself shrewd. You are our Lord and Teacher.
• Thank You that if we abide in You, we are promised to bear much fruit for Your glory.
• Thank You that You set for us an example of how not to sin and be completely dependent on the Holy Spirit.
• Forgive us for dissecting Your Word and not understanding that You don’t change.
• Forgive us for making a god according to our own understanding and making it into an idol to worship.
• Give us the understanding to balance our spiritual and natural lives to walk correctly before You.
• Fill us with the love that only Your Spirit can give us in order to do everything through You.
• Let our actions speak louder than our words of Your power, love, and teachings.

• We ask in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen
