A New Identity

(Genesis 35:18) “Just before she died, Rachel called her son’s name Ben-oni, but his father Jacob named him Benjamin.”

(2 Corinthians 5:17) “Therefore, if anyone is in the Messiah, he is a new creation. Old things have disappeared, and—look!—all things have become new!”

No matter what you or others think of you, what matters is what God has spoken. Don’t allow what others have spoken about you in the past stop you from changing your future. Whatever identified you before you surrendered to Christ is now dead. Your culture, your sins, your social status, your mistakes, and even your achievements all have to die in order for your new identity in Christ to flourish.

Rachel called her son Ben-Oni, which means “son of my sorrow” because she died giving birth. However, Jacob, the father, called him Benjamin, which means “the son of my right hand”. Which name do you think defined that child? It was what the father declared.

Some of the words spoken over us by our peers can leave us with painful scars. But those words don’t speak the truth as they only see in the natural and may come from a difficult situation, but God has seen your future and knows your potential in the spiritual. Don’t let your past drag you down or stop you from living the great and wonderful life God has planned for you.

God has already declared us victorious and called us by a new name. He has a vision for us and has equipped us to complete that vision. The devil might call you a sinner, but God calls you a saint. Be ready to die to all things and ways of thinking of the past no matter how important or valuable you think they are. If God wants you to give up a relationship, friends, a job, way of talking, or certain activities, then you have to obey. If not, He will have to intervene and it will hurt more than you expected.

Only by accepting Christ into your heart can you break the grip Satan has on you and your future. Once you are a new Creature through Christ the old desires, passions, dreams, and character failures are no longer real nor do they have any power over you. Whatever God has planned for you is far better than what you could ever do on your own.

You have a new identity, you’re a new creature… so start acting like one.

• Heavenly Father, When I called in my distress Lord You answered me and set me in a wide place. You have delivered me out of all trouble. You save me from violence.
• Thank You, Father, that you have made us new in Christ.
• Thank You that old things have passed away and we can now walk in freedom.
• Forgive us for trying to hold on to past desires, passions, relationships, or traditions.
• Forgive us for thinking that we cannot live a full life without these things of the past.
• Give us the boldness to let go of the things we are holding on to so that we can experience better things from You.
• We declare that we will no longer live by the negative words people have spoken over us in the past.
• We burn by fire every curse, negative word, or insult anyone has spoken over us.
• We declare that we are Your children through Jesus Christ and that we shall experience a new beginning.

• We ask these things in Jesus’ name. Amen
