(Psalms 39:1) “I told myself, ‘I will keep watch over my tongue to keep from sinning. I will muzzle my mouth when the wicked are around.’”
(Philippians 4:8) “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—keep thinking about these things.”
(Proverbs 12:16) “The anger of a fool becomes readily apparent, but the prudent person overlooks an insult.”
Words cannot be taken back. You can regret saying them, say you are sorry, change what you said and even try and forget them. But once they leave your mouth, they have been written down and you are accountable before God and men for them. Therefore, I would take a few seconds before reacting to anyone else’s words or actions, as everyone will be judged for what they said and not what they heard.
We have all said hurtful things, prejudged others, spoken out of frustration, and unintentionally damaged friendships and family relationships. This is unavoidable as at times we simply let our emotions, pride, and fears get the best of us. This lack of patience is very common, especially with loved ones or those we are closest to.
If this is normally how you react, then you will notice that slowly more and more people will start to avoid you. There are times when God will require you to speak up and even scold someone, but let it be His words and through His Spirit in order to correct with love, edify and encourage. When dealing with wicked people who don’t care whom they hurt, it is advisable to keep quiet.
A good strategy for reacting when someone has seriously done something wrong against you, especially if it was unintentional, is to take some time and cool off. Sit down and think of some of the good qualities of the person who caused the damage. By seeing some good in them first, it will be harder to stay upset, and you might even forgive them without having to react at all.
The Bible advises us to think of good and Godly things at all times as God knows that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Ask for God’s wisdom on how to handle the situation and remember that the devil can also influence you to react prematurely.
You might not like the person you have to deal with, but if they are a believer, you have to love the spirit of Christ inside of them, as it is the same one inside of you. If they are an unbeliever, then remember that Christ’s blood was also shed for them on the Cross.
Bear in mind that God judges us on our reaction towards the wicked, not on their actions against us.
Prayers
• Heavenly Father, You are girded with strength. You cover Yourself with light as with a garment. You are He who put on righteousness as a breastplate.
• Father, we come before you asking for forgiveness for any wrong words spoken in the past.
• We take every wrong word spoken against anyone and burn it with Holy Ghost fire.
• We ask that you will help us and show us how to restore any relationships that were damaged because of our words.
• Give us the patience to wait before we react to anyone’s insults, or to their actions against us.
• We surrender our pride, ego, and insecurities at Your feet Lord.
• We choose today to think of those things which are true, honorable, fair, pure, acceptable, commendable, anything of excellence and if anything praiseworthy.
•
• We ask in Jesus’ Mighty name. Amen
