Lamp or Flashlight

(Acts 26:16-17) “But get up and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for the very purpose of appointing you to be my servant and witness of what you have seen and of what I will show you. I will continue to rescue you from your people and from the gentiles to whom I am sending you.”

(Matthew 5:14-16) “You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. People don’t light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people in such a way that they will see your good actions and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Jesus calls himself the Light of the World, and then He calls us Light. Therefore, we have to act the way He did. We are not to be a judge or an accusing lawyer but simply light within the darkness and a witness of how God has changed our lives. We are not supposed to be afraid of the darkness and submit to it. You can love those in the darkness, show them the way, even lay down your life for them, but do not be afraid of doing what is right in the eyes of God.

If all we do when we meet someone in darkness is accuse them, judge them, keep accounts of all their mistakes and be distant from them, we are acting exactly the same as their false gods. The God of the Bible is not only known for His judgment and the destruction of those that go against Him, but also for His love and closeness to those that are suffering bound by the chains of darkness.

No matter who you speak with, you and I don’t know the whole story. All we can do is talk about what we know, and what we know is Jesus and what He has done for us. Yes, share God’s laws and the way Jesus can set them free from their chains, but don’t go too much further than that by trying to be the Holy Spirit that convicts them of sin. The Word of God is quite capable of doing that on its own.

We are supposed to be a lamp that guides and brings hope for the future through God’s promises. We are not called to be a flashlight in people’s lives to blind them and make them uncomfortable by accusing them the way the devil does.  We are quick to preach about hell and damnation, but we have forgotten to lay down our lives for others the way Christ did for us.

If you are walking correctly with Christ within you, then He will shine wherever you go and those that cannot stand that light, will eventually avoid you. But let them avoid you because of Christ in you and not because of the devil using you. If we would be Light, like Christ intended us to be, there would be a church meeting on every street corner.

Most of the people that don’t go to a church or have stopped attending one is not because of God or the Word that is preached, it´s because of the behaviour of those so called children of God.

• Heavenly Father, You have healed me. You have kept me alive. When my father and mother forsake me, then Lord You will take care of me.
• Thank You Father that You have chosen us to be light in the darkness.
• Thank You that you actually care about us and want to be involved in every area of our lives.
• Forgive us for not understanding how to use the light that is within us.
• Forgive us for condemning others and for not having the compassion of Christ.
• Forgive us for being the cause that so many leave the church or never go to one.
• We pray that we will start to shine our light to attract people to Christ.
• Teach us how to be effective in bringing glory to Your name.

• We ask You in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen
