Unity Begins At The Top

(John 17:11) “I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name, the name that you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one.”

(Psalms 133:1-2) “Look how good and how pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! It is like precious oil on the head, descending to the beard—even to Aaron’s beard—and flowing down to the edge of his robes.”

Jesus, as our Master, set for us an example of how He was of one mind with God. We imitate him by being of one mind with Him, and that automatically makes us one with each other. This is probably the hardest thing to achieve between two individuals, to be of one mind and goal. Surprisingly, when it comes to doing evil or going against God, there is a lot of unity and even support from strangers. We easily agree to pick on someone, laugh at others, steal from the government by lying in our taxes, cheating in school by copying answers… etc.

But for the most part, it is very hard for two individuals to totally agree on all things. We see this clearly within couples. How many times a day do you fight with your spouse about simple disagreements? However, when you are both submitted to Jesus, you become of one mind and the Holy Spirit teaches us how to agree with Him in unity.

When we are united in mind and purpose under God, then we push forward with joy to accomplish God’s will and we get tremendously blessed. This is God’s promise for us when are united in love. When united, we will start to defend each other from accusations instead of blindly accepting them as truth. We will help the ones that are weaker in their faith and slow down for those that take a bit longer to grow in their faith. No one will be left behind for the devil to prey upon. This unity will make us watch each other’s backs instead of stabbing them.

However, this unity has to start from the top within our leaders, as the blessing from God also flows from the top to the bottom. So if you want to be blessed, start first by submitting to your leaders, others will imitate you which will create unity. Start blessing and praying for them, this will change the whole body of Christ starting from the leaders.

I have seen too many leaders fight and quarrel regarding the ministry they belong to, different Biblical interpretations, or their understanding of how a church should be run. Shure, disagreements will always be there on some level, but we need to make sure that our focus should always be to reach as many lost souls as possible with the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. True blessings are an increase of souls who want to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

When we are united from the highest position of authority to the lowest position of service, is when God can move us forward to the next level.
