You Grow When Hated

(John 17:14) “I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.”

(1 John 2:15) “Stop loving the world and the things that are in the world. If anyone persists in loving the world, the Father’s love is not in him.”

(1 Peter 2:1-2) “Therefore, rid yourselves of every kind of evil and deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and every kind of slander. Like newborn babies, thirst for the pure milk of the word so that by it you may grow in your salvation.”

A good sign of maturity and strength of character is when you are not influenced by what people think about you. When you are convinced about a moral truth, no matter what anyone says, you will stick to your beliefs and not sell out God in order to please men. As you grow in the knowledge of Christ and practice what you have learned, you will probably experience more opposition from the world.

So if you feel rejected, misunderstood, prejudged, and basically hated because you live following Christ’s teachings, then congratulate yourself as you and your faith are both growing. But don’t worry, as you continue to grow and experience more and more hardships, you will also grow in the ability to overcome every challenge that the world throws at you.

You will grow in favor with God and with men. God will raise up people that stand by you and help you when everyone else has turned their back on you. The men that show you favor might only be a handful, but they will be enough to make a difference in your life.

Being liked by everyone or participating in every family tradition, local festival or office party is not necessarily a sign of being a good person. Actually, we are advised not to love the things of the world as it is a sign that the Father’s love is not in us.

The danger arises when your friends and activities are the same as when you were not a true follower of Christ. You have now compromised with the world, stunt your spiritual growth, lost the chance for God to form your character, and are basically unable to digest or understand the teachings of the Bible. Your heart is not filled with God’s wisdom, love, and understanding and you will basically do anything to be accepted by your peers, even if that means going against God’s teachings.

If you are hated because you preach the teachings of Christ, you are walking in the right direction and His love reigns in your heart.

• Jesus, You are He who calls us “My Friends”, You are a friend of sinners, He who is separate from sinners.
• We thank You for giving us the word of truth that washes us and saves us.
• Forgive us for being afraid of what others will think of us and for having denied You out of shame.
• Forgive us for desiring to be accepted by everyone, even if that means ignoring Your commandments.
• We ask that you take away the fear of rejection and that we will understand that we do not belong to this world.
• We ask you to take away the fear of losing our friends.
• Help us understand that we now belong to a spiritual family far more important.
• We ask for favor with you and for favor with the men and women you have chosen to be our destiny helpers.
• We reject right now every kind of evil and deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and every kind of slander.
• We ask for a thirst for the pure milk of the word so that by it we may grow in our salvation.

• We ask in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen
